Roma spelled backwards reads Amor, meaning love. To celebrate Valentine’s Day archaeological and art historians curators from the Capitoline Superintendence therefore propose a special initiative with themed visits and itineraries in the heart of the city to discover famous or unusual characters, anecdotes and places.

Beginning with prehistory, the Museo di Casal de’ Pazzi tells us about “Amori senza confini nel Pleistocene - Boundless Love in the Pleistocene”. Museo dei Mercati di Traiano will focus on the 50-year love affair between Emperor Augustus and his wife Livia Drusilla, and the Museo delle Mura will dwell on St. Valentine, the bishop of Terni, and the persecution of Christians by the emperor who built the walls of Rome. Jumping back in time we come to love at the time of the Risorgimento revolutions at the Museo della Repubblica Romana e memoria garibaldina, the ballroom of the Casino Nobile at Villa Torlonia, the love intrigues of the Bonaparte-Primoli family at the Museo Napoleonico and those of the Torlonia family at the Museo di Roma. Finally, at the Museo civico di Zoologia we will find out the seduction techniques adopted in the animal kingdom.

There are also many open-air itineraries (two with Italian Sign Language interpreters). We will find out love stories and courtships in ancient Rome walking around the Circus Maximus, the Theater of Marcellus and the Valley of the Camene with the nymph Egeria and Numa Pompilius. We will then come to the present day and the love “padlocks” of Ponte Milvio and the Street Art of Pigneto, passing through the Rione Pigna to learn about the fate of the poorly married women and of spinsters who, in the Rome of the Popes, paraded in procession to obtain a dowry.
